When a boomlift rental has just been delivered to your workplace and your boss is shouting at you to move it to another spot, the pressure to perform can often become quite overwhelming. Whilst most lifts will operate similarly to each other, it is important to remember that each one will have its own quirks and tricks that you must quickly become aware of.
Step 1: Go directly to the case mounted on the boomlift platform; it is often mounted below the control box. Inside you should find the operator's manual; read the operating section from start to finish.
Step 2: Put on the harness that has been provided and inspect the lanyard for any signs of damage. Perform a pre-use checklist on the boomlift, including a tyre check, to ensure that it is in optimal condition.
Step 3: Climb onto the boomlift rental's platform, secure the safety rail chain and attach your harness to the marked point on the platform. Test out the turn and drive functions, as well as a check on each arm.
Step 4: Raise the platform high enough so that you have a clear view of the front wheels; slowly engage the driving controls. Make sure that you keep an eye on the area around the boomlift at all times for obstacles.
Step 5: To control the lift whilst it is in motion use the steering controls; try not to jerk them, as this can cause an unsafe sway. If you encounter a blind spot, make sure that you rotate the platform.
Step 6: Once you have reached your destination, lower the boomlift's platform to the ground and press the red emergency stop button to kill any power to the controls. Finally, disconnect your harness.
Fortunately, moving your boomlift rental from one location to another is a fairly easy process once you know what you’re doing. Make sure that you have read the instructions provided in the manual and, if your boss is yelling at you to get a move on, make sure that you take a deep breath and try to block him out. Trying to move the lift under duress will only end in disaster.
