Safety Rules – What You Should Know If You Want To Hire A Scissor Lift

This equipment consists of a platform that moves up and down. There is a railing around the platform that is designed to prevent workers from falling. When these lifts are extended and stationary, they serve a function similar to scaffolding (and, therefore, pose many of the same risks). If you want to hire a scissor lift, there are a number of safety rules you need to keep in mind:

 

When the platform is elevated, the equipment becomes very tall and narrow. This can make it susceptible to tipping over if it hasn’t been stabilised and/or moved correctly. The first step to preventing tipping is to ensure that the lift is parked on firm, stable and level ground. Wheel chocks can be used if the ground isn’t quite level.

 

When being used outdoors, ensure that you only operate the platform in weather conditions that it can handle. Since it’s very tall and narrow, you want to avoid using the equipment in windy conditions. It might seem like it would take a lot to push the lift over, but the reality is that a good gust of wind can do the trick if you’re not prepared.

 

Wind isn’t the only thing that has enough force to tip the lift over, which is why you need to ensure that it’s kept clear of other equipment. If you’re working in tight quarters, this may mean that you need to alternate tasks with other workers. This can be an inconvenience, but it’s better than having something bump the platform and tip it over.

 

Another precautionary step that you can take to prevent tipping is to avoid moving whilst the platform is extended. No matter how small the distance. Some models may permit a small level of movement whilst in a partially elevated position, but you should never make assumptions. It is best to retract the platform and then move the lift.

 

Although it’s rare, it is possible for the equipment to become unstable and collapse. It is important that you’re aware of this so that you use the platform correctly at all times. There are safety features built into the lifts to prevent this from happening – these features should be tested and maintained as needed, and they should never be bypassed.

 

The railings are meant to protect workers from falling – they are not meant to be climbed on or sat upon. It might be tempting to climb on them to reach an area, but it’s not worth the risk.
