Even though they are extremely useful machines, many people cannot afford to purchase a forklift outright. In these situations, a rental can be a much more cost-effective solution. You need to understand the various forklift rental classifications, however, to ensure that you choose the right machine for the needs of your workplace.

• Class I and Class II – These machines operate with an electric motor and are suited to indoor applications, especially for loading and unloading trucks or carrying objects around the warehouse.
   
• Class III – These forklifts, also operated with an electric motor, actually require the operator to walk behind instead of drive. These machines are designed for moving objects around and can’t lift very high.
   
• Class IV and Class V – These forklift rentals, operated with an internal combustion engine, are suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. They can lift pallets and carry heavier loads with ease.
   
• Class VI and Class VII – These forklifts operate with either electric or combustion engines and don’t necessarily have a fork. They are mostly used in outdoor construction or even military applications.

By determining which of the above categories your workplace or the task at hand fits into, you will have a greater understanding of which forklift rental class you require. Do you work in a small warehouse, for example? Then you need either a class I or class II machine. Are you responsible for the construction of large buildings? Then you need a class IV or a class V machine.
